Gravity MEA launches the Xshielder range of rugged, explosion-proof smartphones in the UAE and beyond, providing a communications tool that meets the safety requirements of oil & gas, petrochemical, marine, and industrial industries. The XShielder is crafted on the familiar iPhone-16 platform and is engineered and built as an ultra-durable industrial-grade smartphone capable of being used in environments that pose a real-life ignition threat to standard consumer phones.
For the various requirements of the site classification, there are two types of Gravity MEA that meet the required standards. The Xshielder ATEX & IECEx-certified model is recommended for those companies that are subject to regulatory control in several countries and must have a certificate that is valid in both Europe under the ATEX directive and under the internationally recognised IECEx scheme. Thus, it is an easy-to-use solution for companies with operations in multiple locations, offshore and sea-going contractors, and multinational operators, who have no need to worry about compliance when using a single device from either standard.
The Xshielder ATEX Certified has been specifically designed for use in hazardous industrial environments where ATEX compliance is the key regulatory requirement. It provides exactly the same rugged enclosure, explosion-proof protection, and mobile phone capabilities as current smartphones, providing workers in classified areas with a phone designed to keep them safe from sparks, overheating and other ignition sources, while still allowing phone calls, texting, access to information, and the productivity tools that today’s field teams depend on.
The two variants are designed for use in classified hazardous areas, including Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas often found on offshore platforms, refineries and tank farms, chemical plants and other sites where flammable gases, vapours or dust may be present. The Xshielder integrates explosion-proof engineering with a modern smartphone experience so workers can stay connected, pull up safety information, take photos of their inspections, and communicate with the control room without having to leave hazardous areas or use handsets with restricted features or functionality.
Gravity MEA can assist customers with legitimate, certified stock and technical advice on how to determine which variant is most suitable for the site’s zone classification and regulatory requirements for their site. If your operation needs the wider dual-certified model or the ATEX-just model, Gravity MEA’s experts can help you to choose, document and implement the model through your employees.
